"White belt mindset" is definitely something we explicitly talk about in BJJ, or at least those of us who remain humble enough to admit that we don't know everything. I am 100% confident that I've forgotten a great deal more jiu jitsu than I know, and I also recognize that new stuff is being developed every day. There is always so much to learn.
famous phrase "The only thing I know is that I know nothing" was said by the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates, as recorded by his student Plato, and signifies true wisdom comes from recognizing the limits of one's own knowledge, promoting humility and continuous learning over false certainty.
Definitely. And it’s also impossible to know whether or not Socrates was just a literary device for PlaDoh. But that doesn’t seem completely like Plato style to invent someone completely.
Great piece! Reminds me a lot a of the experience of getting a PhD. The more you know, the less it feels like you know since the universe of knowledge expands faster than you can ever process it. The joy of the journey of learning!
Thanks for writing this! I'm tying on my white belt.
Perfect!
Such a fun read. I love this one!
I like it!

Yeah, trying to pick apart who said what between Socrates and Plato messes me up all the time.

Yeah, I’ve heard that theory too. Plato did invent Gorgias though.
This line is a reminder of a key step in our trifecta of Learning, Unlearning, and Relearning.
