This morning I was watching a new Dad Saves America episode about the data center kerfuffle. I appreciate how he brought the appropriate level of nuance to a complex subject. I notice that certain issues tend to get siloed into reductive talky points of partisan groups, which is entirely unproductive. For instance, libertarians love defending data centers as much as leftists love denigrating them, for obvious reasons. The merits of Amazon are another such polarizing issue. But the annoying reality is that people and companies and government policies usually accomplish multiple objectives at once. And some of those are in conflict with others. Too bad the level of public debate seldom addresses the actual complexity even of what currently exists, much less what "we" would prefer, assuming there is a royal "we" that can achieve any meaningful consensus on anything important...
I'm currently watching this interesting analysis [from a year ago] on housing availability and its relationship to homelessness. I learned a few things that I did not know yesterday, which I always enjoy. One thing that surprised me was that possibility that rent-control policies, which I thought were entirely counter-productive, might actually be useful, in certain circumstances, provided they are small and localized. But there are a lot of things covered here that I hadn't thought about much before now...
All great topics. The Data center debte gets sidelined by the ‘water’ issue but without the simple understanding of how those cooling sytems work and how the water cycle operates or everything that uses / wastes water. The more you dig into any topic, the more you find just how little we all know.
Ain't it amusing how people love to apply moral frameworks to every logistical challenge, in order to put their thumb on the scale morally & politically? I think the mechanism of social taboos is too powerful for them to even admit to themselves that they're doing it. Thus we get the politicians we deserve.
The only thing our species has "mastered" is the ability to initiate a mass extinction event that is proceeding faster than any in history and will probably wipe us out completely.
Nature is about to eliminate us because of our hubris and belief that we are in control. We thoroughly deserve it. The only people who have a chance of making it through the polycrisis are those Indigenous communities who live in harmony with nature and respect ecological boundaries and planetary limits.
In a way, I'd be okay with living off the land. Wild animals are more honest than most people. They'll warn you before they attacks. A rattler tries to warn you away before it strikes, a coyote growls a warning and tries to leave you alone. Even a bear or mountain lion try to warn you away before being forced to attack or defend.

I can tell you how hard it is to prepare the land for planting, cultivation, and reaping. You don't always get back what you put into it.

I get where you're coming from there, but the warning isn't always true. For example, a wolf doesn't growl, and a rattlesnake doesn't rattle when it's hunting for food. They just strike and eat. Now, the warning comes when the threat is at parity or otherwise. The rattlesnake warns the human and the dog because both can kill the rattlesnake much more easily than the snake can kill them.
Otherwise, I think you have good points, but it does open a new can of worms. Are humans a natural part of evolution?
